PARKLAND
After working with the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas H.S. in Parkland, Florida, we knew we needed to expand our reach.
This original song, which was written and recorded in one of the classrooms at MSD, puts forth the emotions and insights of these young people as they participated in the Healing Through The Arts initiative at Camp Shine in the summer of 2018.
Over the course of 4 days, students experienced incredible transformation through the therapeutic and creative process. Upon arrival, students were sullen, shellshocked and silent. As they were guided through the project, facilitated by Lane and Pete as well as music therapist Bree Gordon, the students began to connect, share experiences, exhibit more ease and fluidity and discovered profound self-agency and pride in their authentic voices. They presented their song to the rest of the students in the program with exuberance, solidarity and joy. Their song continues to serve as an inspiration and reminder of strength, courage and healing for others impacted by the events of that day.
